Small town, rich in history. Next to Little Green Lake, close to the county seat of Green Lake, in the south-central part of the county. Markesan boosts many outdoor recreational resources and well established industries that provide solid employment opportunities. Both residents and visitors can relax and play in the many parks.

The greater Markesan area has a wealth of habitats for birds and wildlife. The 7,000-acre Grand River Marsh Wildlife area -just west of Markesan and Kingston is a state-owned property that provides wonderful birding opportunities. Over 260 bird species have been found in the Green Lake Country area. This area also offers many recreational activities…biking, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and wildlife watching. Lake Maria Park is a nice area for wildlife photography. Many home and cabin rentals dot the area and 2 area campgrounds as well.

You can also experience some great fishing on Little Green Lake and Lake Puckaway , just a short drive from town. The lakes are full of walleye, bass, perch, blue gill and muskie. Spend a relaxing day on the water kayaking or boating. During the fall, deer, pheasant, and duck hunting are great in the area and during the winter months, snowmobilers will find a groomed trail system that connects riders from Illinois to upper Michigan.

Markesan is a city full of history and you can experience it by visiting the Grand River Valley Museum and Train Depot. The tales of missing gold and even murder will be told when you step back in time at the museum. The love of the land can be seen in the extensive collection of early farming equipment and beautiful hand painted mural within the museum.

Take a leisurely walk through the downtown streets and discover the many nostalgic Victorian homes and carriage houses. In the countryside travel to find horse drawn buggies, fresh produce, and craftsmanship of the large Amish population in the area.

Our public library provides fun and exciting activities for young and old alike year-round along with their extensive collection of books and other resources.
